Setup Cannot Continue the Microsoft Runtime Dll
VMware is a branch of Dell Technologies that provides users with platform virtualization and cloud computing services. The product allows for the installation of multiple instances of several operating systems. With VMware, users can set up virtual machines on a single physical device and use these virtual machines alongside the actual device. This has provided several developers and administrators with the ability to run several environments simultaneously across Windows, Linux and macOS without having more than one device.
VMware is one of the most innovative solutions from Dell. Unfortunately, VMware is not without some few issues every now and then. From DLL errors to error codes, we take a look at the most frequent VMware errors and how to fix them.
1.Error: The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation (2010644) while installing VMware tools on a Windows virtual machine.
This error is usually encountered when users are trying to install VMware tools on a Windows virtual machine. The error may also be displayed as "Setup cannot continue. The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation" and occurs a result of some inconsistencies with the group policies on the virtual machine and registry error.
The solution to this problem lies in the changing of the value field of the CommonFilesDir registry key to a drive letter that you can find on the virtual machine. To change the value of this registry key:
- Click start and select Run, type regedit and click OK. This should open the Registry Window
- Find your way to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\
- Double click the said CommonFilesDir key and edit the value string to correspond to the valid drive letter in the virtual machine. For instance, if the A: drive is available in the Windows Virtual machine, edit the value string of the CommonFilesDir to match A:\Program files\common files
- Click Ok and then from file click exit to close the Registry editor
- Complete your installation of VMware tools to verify
2. Error: The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation (2007225)
This error with the code 2007225 arises then users are trying to complete the installation of VMware view client. The error can arise as "Cannot install VMware view client", "Installing the VMware view client fails" or "Setup cannot continue. The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation", and can be caused if a system reboot is required or another program has not completed
To solve this error, you will need to delete the strings (if any) in the PendingFileRenameOperations and FileRenameOperations keys in the registry. Here's how to start:
- Reboot your device the try to clear the pending processes, temporary install or uninstallation files. This should refresh the PC and clear all pending file operations.
- If the reboot does not work, proceed to open the registry editor by pressing the Windows + R keys. Type in Regedit once the Run dialog opens and press enter.
- Check if the following to see if these registry keys exist:
-
-
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\FileRenameOperations
-
If these keys exist and have a string in any of them, delete the string
- After doing this, try to install the VMWare view client again.
- If you cannot still install it and get the same error, re-run the registry editor and delete the following keys:
(i)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\
(ii)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
3.Msvcp120.dll error
Users may also experience some DLL errors while using the app, at startup or installation. These errors can occur in a couple of ways. Error messages may be displayed as "The application failed to start because "MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Reinstalling the program may fix this issue".
DLL errors often arise when a dynamic link library file is unavailable or cannot be found in the C:\Windows\System32 folder. To solve this issue, you only need to do the following:
i. Search for the correct version of Msvcp120.dll system file
ii. Download the file in the zip compressed folder
iii. Extract it to a location on your PC and copy the original .dll file
iv. Paste the file to location C:\Windows\System32 folder
v. Restart your PC and retry the running or installation of the application
